Ad analysis

While browsing the net i came across this ad for sketcher's shape ups. Now this is nothing to out of the ordinary except that most of these ads target women that want to shape their hind quarters, and this particular ad is targeted to the complete opposite audience. This ad is targeted towards men clearly. The fact of the matter is that not everyone will know who the man above is. But most men and every 49ers fan will definitely know. It's Joe Montana super bowl quarter back. The ad did a pretty good job of catching my attention so by having Joe as the model was a smart move on their part.

The ad shows a middle age Joe and delivers the message that by wearing shape ups the wearer will develop a better posture and stronger core which in turn relieves back and joint pain. The ad also gives Joe's testimonial which makes the shoe look amazing, that this shoe can help a former NFL quarterback it must work for the average American. If that wasn't enough there is a diagram of all the benefits so the people like me who don't like to read can just look at the diagram and see that the shoe helps your entire body not just your feet.

In my opinion i think the ad does a pretty good job overall to attract attention. Granted it doesn't attract women and younger men. But i would say that any man over the age of 30 after seeing this ad might consider this shoe. To me the main attraction of  the ad is the diagram that states that the shoe helps with back pain. Back pain is a major issue with most Americans. 85 percent of people have back pain at some time in their life. So the ad plays on that fact and proposes the shoe as the solution. If i had to give this ad a final grade it would be an A, it does a good job of attracting a particular audience outside of their usual target, which is women, and presents the most influential data in a simple to understand diagram, and come on why would you not listen to Joe Montana he's a championship quarterback in the NFL.

  1. Overall quite a good job here! Your writing is clear and competent, and you organize paragraphs well to make your main points. I do think you might have included a more complete description of the ad--the fact JM's body takes up left half of ad, his posture, clothing, etc. and a description of the other half of page, the two shoes, diagram of body, etc. In addition to JM is there anything else that seems to fit the target audience as you describe it? Use of color? Type of information provided in text?
